When I read a little while ago, that tennis players were being sent death threats and other miserable sayings, I was absolutely stunned. It's just a sport that people are playing because they love it and make a living off of it. What kind of misery is in the world, for any person to target a person with death threats, that they don't even know?
Kyle Edmund reveals disgusting abuse from Facebook trolls following Indian Wells defeat to Novak Djokovic
British number three Kyle Edmund has revealed he was targeted with a flurry of abusive messages following his defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Indian Wells.
Novak Djokovic - who has won the tournament five times - beat Edmund in straight sets in their second round match on Monday evening.
In the wake of the defeat Edmund shared abusive Facebook message he had received from online trolls, sarcastically captioning the post with: "More satisfied customers following the BNPPO17 ATP World Tour."
One anonymous user wrote: "You need to be brutally raped and slaughtered... cut into tiny pieces" and "you need to have your throat cut out and your decomposing, bug-infested body fed to wild pigs."
"I'm going to f****** annihilate you," the Facebook user added.
Andres Kring of Denmark also messaged the tennis player with vitriolic abuse.
"You suck... ugly as f*** and afraid of beating the greatest. You are and always will be a stupid challenger with no wins," he wrote.
The world number 46 battled hard in the second set of his match with Novak Djokovic, winning the first three games before ultimately losing the match on a second-set tie-break.
Djokovic, who benefitted from a first round bye in the tournament, will now face Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the third round.
Edmund's fellow Brit Andy Murray is also out of the Indian Wells after suffering a first round defeat to world number 129 Vasek Pospisil on Saturday night.
