Gun Violence in America

Guns, violence and killing are in the spirit of America

I shudder when I say it

But it is sad and true

The Founding Fathers could never have had this in mind

The  current gun violence in our country

But the country was founded, perhaps, upon the worst violence in the history of the world

That is, the enslaving of Black persons by gun violence to help found the new world

No good human outcome could have ever resulted from this immoral act

Yet, this is the reality of America

Gun violence in America is here to stay

So many reasons, immoral politics, such great sadness

And uncertainty

Long gone are the days of “the good ole fist fights”                     

When men in, the community, resolved conflict without weapons

Could it be true that there are more than 300 million guns

Circulating in the streets of America?

Even so, such desperation world wide

So many young lives, among others, taken by gun violence

No good rationale for these lives to be taken, too soon

What an achievement to reach 30 years of age

People kill people and not guns

Is such a dubious statement

However, the NRA

Shares in much of the responsibility

By supporting the Second Amendment in ways

That the Founding Fathers did not have in mind
