Men try to cash in on $3M insurance scams by lopping off their hands

One can track how grim the economic crisis is in Europe by how desperate people are to cash in. Two cases of men in Spain amputating their own hands for insurance payoffs have been uncovered by investigators, who note a 50-percent jump in fraud over the last five years. In one instance, the claimant sliced off his hand with an electric saw, then said he'd lost it in a car accident and filed 11 claims worth more than $3 million. Jose Luis Nieto of the investigating company noted the cut was simply too clean and suggested a friend might have taken care of the gory details. "A surgeon would never have done it," he said. [Source]
