Dear Tom Brokaw, Please Get Over Lindsay Lohan

Tom Brokaw: Lindsay Lohan Ruined the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

It's all Lindsay Lohan's fault.
Apparently, she ruined the White House Correspondents' Dinner for everyone. Or, at least, Tom Brokaw.
The annual star-studded event is set to take place this weekend in Washington, D.C., but the veteran TV newsman won't be there because of a certain guest who was in attendance at last year's gala.
"The breaking point for me was Lindsay Lohan," Brokaw told Politico during a recent interview. "She became a big star at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Give me a break."
This isn't the first we've heard of the "Nightly News" host's frustrations with the event. Just one week after the 2012 bash, he appeared on "Meet the Press" urging planners to "rethink" it, explaining that it "separates the press from the people that they're supposed to serve, symbolically."
"I think any organization … has to have a kind of self-policing instinct and what we're doing with that dinner, as it has been constituted for the past several years, is saying, 'We're Versailles. The rest of you eat cake,'" he explained to Politico.
Brokaw feels the event has become less about the White House press corps -- which is its intended purpose -- and more about the who's who in attendance. And, in his opinion, it's simply undignified and has gone "downmarket."
"There was more dignity at my daughter's junior prom than there is [at] what I'm seeing on C-SPAN there," he said.
“This is not a crusade on my part," he continued. "It's really up to the organizations and this generation of correspondents in Washington to make the determination for themselves. … Why do we think to have a successful evening, you have to have Donald Trump as your guest of honor, for example, or Lindsay Lohan?"
However, there are at least two stars Brokaw believes do deserve invites to such a high-profile event.
"Claire Danes is not someone I'm talking about. She's a big deal," he admitted. "And you can bring in George Clooney, he loves to come there. He's a serious guy in Hollywood."
