I Like Gypsies

From the caravan to the catwalk! Romany gypsy ditches traditions to follow her dream of being a Victoria's Secret model

A gypsy is shunning the caravan lifestyle for the catwalk in a bid to become the first traveler to make it as a high fashion model.
5ft 10in Kristen Stamper, 20, from Nashville Tennessee, told the New York Post that her 'dream' is star in campaigns for Victoria’s Secret or appear in the pages of men's magazine, Maxim.
But the brunette beauty, who is nicknamed Trouble by family, will no doubt ruffle a few feathers at her decision to leave the Romany gypsy community where women are traditionally expected to stay at home and look after the children.

However, Miss Stamper seems determined to make it in the fashion world - even if it means losing friends along the way.
'If I want to build a career, I can’t let my gypsy culture hold me back,' she said.
'I am sure the gypsies will think that I am dreaming too big . . . But I know who I am and what I am. As long as I know, I don’t care what other people think.'
Miss Stamper was brought up by her conservative mother, Jeanette, who always encouraged her to look for a husband over pursuing a career.

After she graduated high school, Miss Stamper's Facebook page indicates that she went on to get jobs as a server at Papa John's Pizza and Hooters, both hotbeds for men.
However, after watching America's Next Top Model, Miss Stamper caught the modeling bug.
Last year she took her first plane ride to New York to try and get signed by an agency.
Thanks to her efforts she is now signed with Nashville-based firm, AMEX Talent.
Miss Stamper's life-changing adventure is chronicled in tonight's episode of TLC's hit reality show, My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding

Unlike the other subjects on the show, marriage is the last thing on her mind. While she goes about establishing herself as a model, Miss Stamper's mother makes her disapproval clear.
'Maybe I'm over protective but that's my responsibility to protect my daughter against the gorgers [a derogatory term for non-gypsies],' the concerned parent says.
Miss Stamper told the New York Post that she sometimes wished she wasn't a gypsy growing up but now she believes it will make her stand out in the modeling industry.
'It’s something that sets me apart, and I like to be original and different,' she concluded.
