Why Gloria Steinem Is Sticking Up for Jennifer Aniston

Yahoo Celebrity

Jennifer Aniston may be one of Tinsel town's most famous actresses, but ever since her marriage with Brad Pitt fell apart eight years ago, the media has been relentless. Now, Gloria Steinem is coming to her defense.
The 79-year-old, women's activist told People at Thursday night's premiere of the new HBO documentary, "Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katrina Gilbert," that Aniston's life can't compare to her own.
“I can say whatever it is that I feel. But because of her art and because she is known for playing characters, by definition not herself — I think it's more difficult for an actor like Jennifer to be understood as a unique human being."
The two women met when Aniston interviewed Steinem at February's MAKERS Conference, touching on gender diversity in Hollywood, feminism, and Steinem's impact on women's advancement.
While Aniston's life might be misunderstood by many, Steinem thinks that the 45-year-old actress is unfairly judged for not being married with children.
"What about George Clooney? Nobody brings that up, and he's much more ostentatiously unmarried with no kids — but in a fine way."
Well, Aniston may not be judged for being unmarried much longer. After all, she is engaged to Justin Theroux. Check out this video to see what else Steinem had to say, and tune in to "The Insider" on TV tonight for the latest in entertainment news.

I admire both of these woman and wish them the very best. I am too old to be inspired by Ms Anniston but thank her for the many hours of entertainment and Ms Steinem I thank for giving myself and other women
of today the benefits that much of us enjoy. There is still a lot of work to be done. I am 72 and still see the
ways men and women are treated by employers and government are not ) we are not inferior.

"Steinem thinks that the 45-year-old actress is unfairly judged for not being married with children." Who is judging her? I'm sure there are people who do, but I don't think it's that big of a problem. I read the comments on a lot of the articles on Yahoo (yikes, I know) and most of them are positive regarding Jennifer Aniston in general. I can't recall reading any asking why she isn't married with kids or condemning her for not being married with kids. I can't say that I'm a fan of hers, but I don't think there are too many haters out there for her-especially not for her martial or motherhood status.

I think she is very secure in her success and has not yet met the man she wants to father her child. Pretty smart decision, as so many marriages end in divorce and the children end up paying the price even though the parents try to avoid that happening. I see no reason to feel sorry for her OR to condemn her. She is living a pretty full life. You know, it could be that perhaps she CAN'T have children, which is no one's business! If you like he, support her work, if not, support whomever you like. No need to tear her apart. Who has she ever harmed?

How are her problems different from any other woman? Being judged for being 45 and not married with children? These days, more and more women are putting off having children, and the average age of marriage keeps going up. I don't think there's a lot of judgement there...Plus being wealthy and attractive, I don't think Jen has it too bad. Sounds like Steinem is projecting her own problems and insecurities.

''...because she is known for playing characters...I think it's more difficult for an actor like Jennifer to be understood as a unique human being.'' WHAT!?! Compared to say a ''unique'' alien!?!
That statement is so filled with nothingness, I can't even believe I am commenting on it!
Jennifer is beautiful, rich, and 'misunderstood!?! Boo-Hoo!
I know many ''unique human beings'' going through more difficulties than Jennifer Aniston!

Actors are here to entertain us (whether you like what they do or not). What they do outside of that should not be anyone's business nor is anyone in the position to judge. How are you living your life? Can we judge based on your comments about people you don't know? grow up. @ Jean C...Gloria can choose whomever she wants to share the limelight..what's the big diff??

Ha, poor old Gloria Steinman wants to be relevant again by doing what? Sticking up for a rich, white, millionaire actress? Awww boo hoooo. Why not help out the poor in underdeveloped countries instead of sticking up for rich white millionaires? #$%$!
I thought old Gloria was dead!

Well! Thank you, Miss Gloria Steinham for another fifteen minutes of your fame. OR your cheeky attempt to revive some fame.
Jennifer was merely used as a poster child for you to stick your head out on a non-issue.
Now be a good piece of dust and blow away.

There is a huge difference in Anniston and Clooney, yep, and if Gloria does not know that by now, she is way past teaching her the birds and the bees, LOL

Anniston chose not to have kids with Brad, made it clear to the media, she would never have kids of her own, it was all about her loosing her figure, that is what it boiled down to.

Brad loves kids, wanted kids, she refused him, and would not adopt. It is her choice and her right, she lost a goo man for sure, and Jolie got him.

I am glad he left her for Jolie, both of them love kids, that is clear to see, and I am happy for the both of them.

George, well he loves kids, but chooses not to marry, so do not compare him to Anniston. Totally different situation.

No one misunderstands Jennifer, never have, it is very clear.

Her choice, so what is the big deal, and why keep brining it up, let her alone and let her live her life the way she sees fit.
