Is Michael Phelps looking to make a return to the Olympics in 2016? 
The swimmer's longtime coach Bob Bowman said the most decorated Olympian of all time is testing the competitive waters and looking to race at a swim meet "sometime soon," according to a Chicago Tribune report. 
Phelps, who has a record 18 Olympic gold medals, hasn't competed in a meet since 2012. The 28-year-old has long said he would retire from the sport before he turned 30. 
But talk of a comeback started when Phelps re-entered the US drug-testing program for competitive athletes in 2013. 
Since rejoining the program, Bowman told the Tribune that the four-time Olympian has been practicing at the North Baltimore Athletic Club four to five times a week. "He looks like he is definitely in shape," Bowman said. 
However, Phelps' longtime coach said it was "too early to tell" whether Phelps would compete at the 2014 US Championships in Irvine, Calif., this August to nab a spot on the US team for the 2015 World Championships.
"If he swims a meet in the next couple months and does well, he will probably give it a shot in Irvine," Bowman told the Tribune's Philip Hersh. "But he doesn't have to do that to have a shot at the 2016 Olympics."
