Hospital Gave New Mom Wrong Baby

New moms find out hospital where they gave birth made major mistake

When your baby is born weighing 6 pounds, 8 ounces, but a few hours later she already weighs 8 pounds, 4 ounces, something's up. That's what happened to Argentine lawyer Maria Lorena Gerbeno, who told doctors at the Sanatorio Argentino hospital in San Juan that something didn't seem right about the newborn that was handed to her to take home. Doctors insisted it was her baby, but she remained suspicious for three weeks, at which point she returned with the baby for a routine checkup.
At that checkup is where she met Veronica Tejada, a fellow new mom who had given birth to a baby girl on the same day Gerbeno had. After chatting, the women suspected their babies had been switched, which was confirmed after Gerbeno demanded a DNA test. "I spent three weeks with a baby [who] was not my daughter, but I gave her all my love and knew that the other mom would do the same," Gerbeno told local station C5N. The hospital says it is trying to "clarify what happened"; both women are considering legal action.
