ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —A shootout with police and a high-speed chase ended at Fourth Street and Montano Road just before noon Saturday.
Albuquerque police confirm the suspect in the shootings is dead.
During the chaos, two Albuquerque police officers and one Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputy were shot.
Witnesses said a man with a gun approached another person washing his black Corvette at Broadway Boulevard and Iron Avenue and told him to call police and tell them "I'm waiting."
“The man was dressed in fatigues. He had this big gun. You could tell he was ready to kill anyone in his path,” witness Jennie Noriega said.
Witnesses said the man with the gun then stood behind a bus stop and waited for police to arrive. He fired around 15 gunshots at officers, police said.
Two Albuquerque police officers were shot. The are stable and recovering in the hospital.
The suspect then jumped into a police car and led other officers on a chase through the North Valley.
A Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy who tried to stop the car with a spike belt was also shot near Fourth Street and Osuna Road. The deputy is out of surgery, but she remains in the intensive care unit.
The chase ended at a gas station at Fourth Street and Montano Road.
"It was frightening, very frightening, we told my niece get inside and just lock all the doors because we didn't know what was going on," witness James Garcia said. "It's pretty frightening, it's sad, to think that it's right here in our own neighborhood. I consider Albuquerque a pretty safe place to be, for this to happen in our backyard, it's pretty unbelievable."
Police have shut down that intersection and have created a wide net blocking traffic from the area.
One witness said he saw police throw what appeared to be a flash bang grenade toward the car. He said they swarmed the car and backed away without firing any shots.
The suspect is dead, but police haven't released any details about how that happened.
The injured officers have not been identified. Albuquerque police said they are contacting the families of the officers now.
Because of the several crime scenes, APD said it doesn't anticipate releasing anymore information Saturday night.
APD is asking all witnesses of the shootings to call them at 505-242-2677.
KOAT Action 7 News will update this story as soon as information becomes available.
