University of Maryland Beauty Queen Resigns After Pot Charge
A Maryland beauty queen has turned in her crown after an altercation during a homecoming dance last month led to drug charges.
Porsha Harvey, crowned Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore last fall, told school officials she was resigning following the allegations, The Daily Times reported Friday.
Harvey, 21, of Newark, Del., was initially arrested Feb 15. when she elbowed a campus police officer at a homecoming dance after he asked her to clear out of a crowded hallway, Princess Anne police said. She was later jailed and charged with disorderly conduct.
Three days later, during a bail review in court, a bailiff found a small amount of marijuana on her when she passed through security scanners, police said. She was cited for marijuana possession.
Harvey was released from custody upon signing a criminal citation. She still faces up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine for the disorderly conduct and failure-to-obey charges, according to The Daily Times.
Despite her resignation, a letter from the university's Office of Campus Life urged Harvey to relinquish her position as Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the newspaper added.
The small public university of about 4,000 students is located in southern Maryland, west of Ocean City. A former Miss University told The Daily Times that she's disgraced by her successor’s actions.
"This has never happened before, and this is not a good first," said Hattie Jones Penn, 1973 Miss UMES. "It's embarrassing to the university, considering the leadership role she has."
