Teacher of the year gets 38 years: Sex with 12-year-old puts teacher behind bars

A Teacher of the Year gets 38 years in prison because she had sex with a 12-year-old is one of a parent’s worst nightmares. And Teacher of the Year Ethel Anderson didn’t get 38 years for just having sex with a student, she also bombarded him with 230 pages of racy text messages, according to a Dec. 11, 2013, Canada Nowreport.
The former Teacher of the Year’s justification that those text messages “were just sexual therapy” and that they were intended to motivate a troubled student, had no impact on her sentencing on Tuesday.
When 30-year-old Ethel Anderson from Riverside -- who is not only a former Teacher of the Year but also a married mother -- received her sentencing of 38 years, tears streamed down her face and she told the judge that she was not a sexual predator.
“I am ashamed and embarrassed to be standing in this courtroom and I keep telling myself this is not my life. I share all this with you judge, in the hope that there is something you see in me, that I’m worthy of mercy.”
During the trial, it appeared that there had been little mercy for a 12-year-old troubled student who had become the Teacher of the Year’s sexual pet.
In his testimony, the victim, who was 12 years old when he was molested by Ethel Anderson, testified that he was seduced by his teacher and that even though he first thought that she was his girlfriend, he tried to eventually stop it because he was tired of lying and hiding the relationship from his mother.
“I felt like she was a girlfriend, I loved her and she said that I was her boyfriend and she loved me. She would rub on my legs, kiss on my ears, neck and stuff like that…We would tongue kiss.”
Even though the then 12-year-old had no desire to lose his virginity to a woman twice his age, the Teacher of the Year’s “motivation” was apparently not so much in the interest of the 12-year-old boy but in her own sexual interest.
Before the sentencing, the victim’s mother had written a letter to the judge expressing her anger and pain that her son had been seduced by a teacher who she thought she could trust. “There were many times during this trial I could have gotten up to scream, yell and slap you [the teacher] and tear you apart with my bare hands,” she wrote.
Even though Ethel Anderson’s parents tried to appeal to the judge and pointed out that their daughter felt remorseful, the judge felt very little mercy.
During the sentencing on Tuesday, the judge told Ethel Anderson “if you have sex with a child, then expect to go to prison.“ And with that, he sentenced the Teacher of the Year to 38 years behind bars.
