The body of former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher has been exhumed Friday more than a year after he killed his girlfriend then committed suicide.

TRAGIC SPORTS DEATHS

Remembering the many athletes sports lost way too soon.
Belcher’s body was exhumed at his family’s request at a New York cemetery, the family’s attorney told the Kansas City Star. The family hopes the exhumation will shed some light on why Belcher shot Perkins nine times before shooting himself in the head at the Chiefs practice facility.
“If his brain had been examined (when he died), we’d have a better understanding of why he did what he did,” Bennet Omalu, who is credited with discovering the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), told the newspaper. “We would have a better understanding about concussions and playing football, and we would advance the understanding of the science of all of this.”
Belcher played all four seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs and did not have any diagnosed concussions.
