Checking in on the offseason: Resting, recharging, light-bulb changing
It feels like just yesterday that blue and white confetti fell at the O2 Arena in London, signifying the end of the ATP and WTA regular season.
But alas, the start of the Brisbane International, Qatar Open and Chennai Open — the first tournaments of the 2014 season — is less than three weeks away. This means it’s time to check in on your favorite players and see what they’ve been up to during their short off-season (however at this point, I think it’s considered the preseason).
Novak Djokovic: He’s been hamming it up on his much-needed off-season break. I’m guessing there’s a bit of wedding planning on his agenda too. (Photo from Facebook)
Serena Williams: Serena didn’t announce any clear vacation plans before the end of the season, which she said (joked?) allowed her to stay focused on the task at hand. She eventually took a trip to Jamaica and then headed down to South America with Venus for an exhibition.
Oh, and she’s been watching Tennis Channel:
Roger Federer: No rest for the weary. Federer was back on court less than two weeks after the ATP World Tour Finals. (Photo from Twitter)
Victoria Azarenka: Recharging with RedFoo, obviously.
Maria Sharapova: Fashion shows, gym work, exhibitions and Sugarpova publicity tours — Sharapova’s off-season has been jam-packed.
Andy Murray: Back surgery ended his season in September, but he’s back on the court working hard in Miami. (Photo from Facebook)
Sloane Stephens: Training under Paul Annacone’s direction by day, spending lots of quality time with her family by night. (Photo from Facebook)
Juan Martin del Potro: Training hard in Argentina. (Photo from Facebook)
Tommy Haas: How many Germans does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Haas the Handyman has been busy. (Photo from Facebook)
Laura Robson and Jamie Hampton: Robson hit up Argentina, and Hampton took in Egypt on their respective vacations. Now they’re training in Florida, cheering on the Caroline Panthers and nerding out at bookstores. (Photo from Facebook)
Milos Raonic: He told SI.com that he would be basing his pre-season fitness work at home in Canada, so he could at least sleep in his own bed and eat some good home cooking. (Photo from Facebook)
Eugenie Bouchard: After some R&R on the beach, followed by an extensive amount of press back home in Canada, Bouchard is now training with Nick Saviano in Florida. And possibly getting cryogenically frozen.
Caroline Wozniacki: The Dane has been balancing her training with girlfriend duty, supporting Rory McIlroy at a number of tournaments the last two months. (Photo from Twitter)
Agnieszka Radwanska: Apparently people still rollerblade in Poland. Who knew? (Photo from Twitter)
Madison Keys: Despite the fact that tennis players spend their entire lives under the sun, they still can’t stay away.
