Africanized bees kill dog, injure another in St.Pete

ST. PETERSBURG — A swarm of Africanized killer bees attacked two pit bulls this morning, killing at least one of them, St. Petersburg police said.
The two dogs were discovered out in the street near 636 23rd Ave. S. at about 11:15 a.m., said St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz. One was dead, and the other was taken to a veterinarian, but it was not clear whether it would survive, Puetz said.
A bee expert has determined there is a colony of Africanized killer bees in the attic of a nearby house, at 675 23rd Ave. S., Puetz said. He has told authorities that it is not advisable to try spraying the colony during daylight as such an action might agitate the insects, so he will return at dusk and exterminate the colony at that time, Puetz said.
In the meantime, the police department has stationed two officers at the address to keep pedestrian traffic around the residence to a minimum until the extermination is completed
