A driver who hit two pedestrians was injured when he was pulled from his vehicle and beaten up by bystanders in the Burnside neighborhood, officials said.
Two pedestrians were hit by the car in the 9300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue about 7:15 p.m., and the driver also was injured, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien. All those injured were adults, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Firefighters called a 10-1 asking for police assistance when they arrived on scene because a group of people on the scene were unruly, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Juan Hernandez.
Two pedestrians were taken from the scene in serious-to-critical condition, Hernandez said. One of them, a man whose age was not released, remained in critical condition this morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, authorities said.
The other pedestrian, a 49-year-old woman, was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where her condition was stabilized.
The 59-year-old  driver was pulled out of the vehicle and attacked by a group on the scene, officials said. He was taken to Stroger, where his condition was stabilized.
A witness told WGN-TV that the woman was hit by the car, flew up in the air and landed on her face. When two men got out of the car, about 10 people, apparently relatives of those hit by the car, then started beating them up.
