School bus driver fired for leading students in morning prayers

George Nathaniel had received two warnings about leading a prayer every morning, but the Minnesota bus driver kept saying his Amens. That commitment cost him his job. "I let them know I am a pastor and I am going to pray,” he told the Star Tribune, adding that he thought it was wrong to "fire a bus driver for praying for the safety of the children." Nathaniel, who is a pastor at two Minneapolis churches, says that his termination is a violation of his right to the freedom of speech. But the law doesn't appear to be on his side; the Supreme Court ruled in 1962 that it was "unconstitutional for public schools to encourage or lead students in prayer" and the American Civil Liberties Union is siding with the court. Nathaniel isn't backing down, insisting that he's prayed on every school bus route he's ever had. "We got to get Christians to be able to be Christians and not have to be closet Christians," he said.
