Melbourne (AFP) - An Australian waiter's bold request for a "selfie" from Maria Sharapova was met with an icy response from the Russian world number three.
Sharapova admitted she was taken aback when her bill at a Melbourne cafe arrived together with the waiter's smartphone and a request for a photo, along with an autograph.
Sharapova, who was relaxing ahead of next week's Australian Open, duly took a picture -- not of herself, but of a man sitting nearby.
"I actually took a picture of the guy next to me. True story," she told journalists on Saturday.
The brush-off suggests Sharapova is in no mood for frivolity as she embarks on the season's first Grand Slam, following a four-month lay-off with a shoulder injury.
Sharapova, who has long struggled with her right shoulder and had surgery in 2008, said she was delighted to be in Australia after missing last year's US Open.
"I'm happy to be back playing a Grand Slam. I missed the last one at the end of last year," she said. "I'm happy to get myself back in form and really start well here."
Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam winner who reached last year's semi-finals, added: "You obviously have to lower your expectations a little bit and be a bit realistic about maybe the first few matches.
"You have to grind, work through them, hope to get better as the tournament goes on."

Celebrities owe the public nothing. Why would anyone ever think that they do? An individual makes a conscious decision to like or dislike another person. Personally, I don't care if I ever see a "celebrity".

Where I live a famous wrestler lives nearby and comes home from time to time when not traveling. He use to eat in a family type restaurant I go to all the the time but I never bothered him. However, servers would always wait untill he came by and then hounded him for autos. He stopped coming into the restaurant. The chicks wouldn't let him eat in peace.

The foolish selfie-mania has spiraled out of control anyway. I am so sick of morons who are so in love with themselves!

I was at a show and there were a few big-name celebrities sitting about 5 feet behind me. I can't tell you how annoying it was between sets, smart phones would go up and flash, flash, flash, people taking photo after photo. I was right in front of them so I felt like I got a taste of the celebrity life and it was awful. Constant flashes. Constant stream of people walking by. I couldn't imagine trying to enjoy a night out with my spouse and friends (as they were), in a club, and dealing with this. They refused autographs and photos, and I hardly blamed them, they were not there to entertain us, they were there to be entertained. If a celeb is out in public trying to enjoy a show or a meal, for the love of God leave them alone! It would be different if it was after a match or an event where it's expected but let them at least try and live their life in peace.

The way she screams should have never, ever been allowed in professional tennis. She's a rude, boorish woman with zero class.

On the other hand my son met Tom Izzo (BB coach of Mich State Univ) and asked him to sign a photo.
Not only did Tom autograph the picture, he personalized it and thanked my son for asking.
All that just prior to game time.

I saw Jay Leno at a motorcycle parts swap meet. Everyone left him alone.
