Nathan Hot Dogs Are Among The Best

Fire Breaks Out at Nathan's Famous in Coney Island

A fire erupted Sunday morning at Nathan's Famous, the setting for the July 4th International Hot Dog Eating Contest. According to the New York Post, the flames broke out around 9:40 a.m. at the iconic Coney Island restaurant on Surf Avenue. Though there was no known cause, the FDNY reports there was construction being done. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished after 20 minutes.
Nathan's Famous Fire
Nathan's was significantly damaged after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on New York's coastline. The frankfurter stand found most of its equipment under water after the hurricane destroyed Coney Island's many landmarks. While the boardwalk branch of Nathan's Famous reopened in late March, the flagship location, which has stood on the corner of Surf Avenue and Stillwell since 1916, remains closed with hopes to open by Memorial Day, reports Eater. No word yet on if there was further damage caused by yesterday's fire.
