‘We don’t sell junk food:’ McDonald’s CEO defends menu to 9-year-old
“We don’t sell junk food,” McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson told a 9-year-old girl when she visited the fast food company’s headquarters to attend a shareholders meeting and complained about the offerings for children, UPI reported May 29.
The CEO’s claim that “we don’t sell junk food” may not fly with nutrition experts, who often cite McDonald’s when lamenting the high amounts of sodium and fat in fast food and the amount of junk food in the American diet.
But the CEO behind the “we don’t sell junk food” claim had found himself defending his massive corporation to a young girl, the daughter of a nutrition activist and blogger.
The girl, Hannah Robertson, attended the shareholders meeting last week and stood up to question Thompson about McDonald’s fare for children during the question-and-answer portion of the meeting, apparently considering it junk food.
“It would be nice if you stopped trying to trick kids into wanting to eat your food all the time,” the brave 9-year-old said.
Thompson rose to McDonald’s defense, stating that “we don’t sell junk food.” Thompson said that McDonald’s has taken strides to add more fruits and vegetables to their kids meals. Happy Meals, which cater to the young crowd, now come with apple slices (and french fries), for example.
