Donald Sterling bought the Los Angeles Clippers in 1981.
The irony is thick with this one.
Turns out Donald Sterling, Clippers owner being investigated by the NBA for allegedly making "disturbing and offensive" remarks, was set to be honored by the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP next month.
Sterling was supposed to get a lifetime achievement award at a gala celebrating the organization's 100th birthday on May 15 alongside other honorees such as Al Sharpton and Mayor Eric Garcetti.
This isn't the first time the NBA team owner was celebrated by this organization's chapter: The City of Angels' branch of the civil rights organization had honored Sterling with a lifetime achievement award in 2009. This came amidst former Clipper Elgin Baylor's lawsuit against Sterling alleging the owner of racism.
At the time, LA branch president Leon Jenkins told the LA Times, "We can't speak to the allegations, but what we do know is that for the most part [Sterling] has been very, very kind to the minority youth community."
No word on whether or not the LA office intends to follow through on this honor, though the NAACP seems to be distancing itself from its regional branch as seen in this tweet:
